In the Oven with Crystal

2. This is Crystal.

I'm weird & get random stupid ideas. Sometimes after explaining them, I have models who are adventurous enough to take me up on said ideas. This shot arose from one of those times.

After I a few test shots, the models just weren't getting what I had in my head. I pulled them out & to illustrate better what I wanted from them, I physically got in the oven myself. THAT was when they got it! LOL.

I almost never pick out my model's wardrobe but I later thought the blue star socks being the same shade as this model's undies was a pleasant surprise.

Years later I'd submit this same piece & hang & frame it in a small local show & was told the piece was the most complained-about. Yet out of the 12 others pieces submitted, this was my mother's favorite. She found the concept of a person physically getting in an oven hysterical.

Rear ends illicit very strong opinions apparently.

Carly O'Neil NYC

I have an (arguably) bad habit of when engaged in a compelling conversation, I completely lose all track of time.

My shoot with Carly Erin O'Neil in her NYC apartment went something like chat for 20 minutes, shoot some, chat for 30, shoot a little more, chat for undisclosed amount of time & discovered we'd reach the limit of our previously agreed upon time frame. She's simply one of those creatively mesmerizing individuals that captures my imagination.

I'm sure I easily could have shot more but that'd simply mean more pictures I'd have to edit...& I absolutely HATE editing. LOL

From what she told me, the shoot was emotionally significant because this was her first "real" shoot back from a trauma-induced professional hiatus. For those who know her, its not exactly a state secret but I'll leave the rest of the story to her if she so chooses.

Artistic Kudos

Happy New Year, everyone! May 2010 be better than the previous year.

I'm normally reluctant to have people use my work used as reference or stock material because in all honesty, I view my work as finished product. Its an intrepretation of my vision. Even when looking at samples of a prospective artist's work, it can be kinda a mystery as to what the finished product will look like.

- Will it be trashy?
- Will there be actual effort put into it? (Sorry but a crop job & playing w/ the colors doesn't cut it.)
- Will they credit me & list their source material?
- Will the finished product be demeaning to my subjects themselves?

Its always kinda a crapshoot. So long as the prospective artist asks beforehand (instead of just assuming I've already given permission), I usually give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bazzathe over on deviantART extended that courtesy. Since he took the 10 seconds it takes to fire off an email, I gave him the creative blessing.
